Matthew 5:13
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

I’ve heard numerous sermons I appreciate on Matthew 5:13. We know that salt is a preservative and salt brings flavor. Jesus calls humanity the salt of the earth implying that we are to be people of impact for the world!

What struck me differently about this passage today was the idea of PURPOSE. If salt loses its saltiness, it loses its purpose entirely. When purpose is removed it is worthless! I never realized that Jesus is suggesting that if we fail to live and love as he calls us to do, we lose OUR purpose. He isn’t simply recommending a faithful commitment to him, he says that if we do not walk out our purpose we should we thrown out and trampled underfoot.

We were created with a purpose. Let’s not waste that purpose!
