Hallmark movies. So predictable. So warm. So uplifting. So cheesy. Sigh, I love them.

They are all the same, but I keep watching. Woman leaves home after tragedy. Woman moves to small town to start over. Woman meets unassuming man. Woman and man fall in love. Inevitable conflict over why they shouldn’t be together. Woman and man resolve conflict and Christmas is saved. Woman and man live happily ever after.

Why are we drawn to Hallmark movies? Why do we keep watching when we know what is going to happen?

I think it is because we crave a happily ever after. I think it is because we want to escape the pressures of real life. I think we wish life were that simple. I think we want to see other people happy, because we want to be happy.

Most days I wish life was like a Hallmark movie, don’t you? That would mean our greatest challenges could be resolved within 1 hour and 45 minutes!

This got me thinking about the deepest longings of our heart. Humanity longs for the redemption of all things. We were created for a happily ever after—with God! We all identify with the struggle, and we all want the fairy tale ending.

In reality, we know that life is far more complicated than Hallmark portrays.

Romans 8:21-23

…that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until this present time. Not only that, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.…

Scripture tells us that even creation is groaning waiting to be redeemed!(Creation is waiting for it’s happily ever after!)

So take heart, friends. You are not alone. Our happy ending is coming. We live with the hope of the glorious, final resurrection and the redemption of all things! Don’t forget that when things get hard, we already know the end of the story…and it’s a good one!
